Created for the 2025 Nunhead Art Trail by Shirin Majid, Into Your Element is a site-specific window installation and collection of paintings that invites you to consider how to create a space you love, connect with your own nature, and find harmony in the chaos of the world around you.
Inspired by the 14th century Korean painting Irworobongdo (Korean: 일월오봉도), or sun, moon, and five peaks, the installation in ALKEMI’s shopfront will feature a series mountains cut and painted to the grain of the wood. Each window is anchored by a sun and a moon representing the yin and yang principle.
Inside, six plywood paintings feature alchemical signs for fire, water, earth, air, in addition to the sun and moon. These are the constant, powerful forces in our lives that we move with but cannot control.
In contrast to the sharp and controlled lines of the alchemical signs, a series of abstract paintings painted in a palette of cobalt blue, pale sky, burnt umber and deep reds, reflect cycles of energy and stillness.
The collection considers that the idea of home as a sanctuary is not static: it’s a living space where we find equilibrium between order and chaos, and allow transformation to unfold.
All works are for sale.
